Having had no winter testing the first round of the year at Brands Hatch was poised to be a difficult weekend. Luckily this was not the case! Due to to fantastic work by Martin Chambers over the winter the car performed faultlessly all weekend.
Starting on Friday the car was quick from the first session which set the tone for the weekend. On Saturday morning an early start led to a slippery wet track however I was able to set the fastest time of the session of the session allowing the second place starting position to be secured for the first race of the weekend.
Race 1 was lead by my team mate Sam Smith for the first 5 minutes before I was able to make a move for the front. From there on it was a hard battle but I was able to hold onto first place and win the first race of the BRSCC Mazda Mx5 Championship!
Race 2 was slightly easier due to a lucky first lap allowing me to make a gap which I was able to hold for the duration of the race resulting in 2 wins on the Saturday.
Sunday brought a relaxed morning before the race start at 11:30. Having made a mistake on lap 1 I worked with my team mate Sam Smith to break away from the field but disappointingly this did not occur as expected due to a determined Brian Trot keeping both of us honest. With 10 minuets of the race remaining I decided progress needed to be made so a move for 1st place was needed. Under braking into Clearways a dive down the inside displaced Sam and allowed me to make the progress needed. For the rest of the race me and Sam where able to break away from the pack resulting in another 1-2 finish for MCR.
Overall it was a brilliant weekend and a great start to my title defence. Next up is Snetterton in a couple weeks time.
